PORTFOLIO

The portfolios here cover my exhibitions between 2010 and 2015, and a selection of other works. Most of the paintings are in oil on canvas with some gouache and mixed media on paper.

STAY

Commune.1  2015

"In 'Stay' we see Briggs move towards a strong emphasis on materiality and the painted surface: drips, rubbing out and vertical and horizontal brushwork brings attention to the two dimensionality of the work."

ENTANGLED

Commune.1  2013

Natural phenomena exist outside of our concepts of them, and this work is in part about attempting a type of pre-reflective perception. The paintings suggest an inescapable – and beguiling - entanglement with the natural world.

THERE BUT NOT THERE

Association for Visual Arts, 2011

"In this series of paintings from nature, the artist seems to search out, as if from within the mass of paint, the marks to fix an illusive memory or image."

FLOW

Association for Visual Arts, 2010

In these works I play with the tension between abstracting and representing a place, using what the surface of the painting offers to explore line and colour. The surfaces contain the meditative, transformative flow of painting.
